About our research programme
OneSelf’s mission is to advance the understanding of human biology. The scale of de-identified, longitudinal health data we hold creates an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to medical and wellness research — identifying patterns that no individual dataset could reveal.
Participation in the OneSelf research programme is entirely voluntary. It does not affect your membership, your data access, or the quality of your service.
Opt-in only
Research participation requires explicit consent. You will never be enrolled automatically. You can manage your research preferences at any time from your account settings.

What data is used for research
Where you consent to research participation, the following categories of data may be included in research datasets:
- Biomarker results (blood, DNA, microbiome)
- Wearable-derived signals (sleep, heart rate, activity, recovery)
- General health profile information (age range, sex, health goals)
- Longitudinal health trends observed over your membership period
Your name, contact information, and account credentials are never included in research datasets. Precise location data is not collected or used.

How data is de-identified
Before any data is used in research, it undergoes a rigorous de-identification process consistent with the Australian Government’s De-identification Decision-Making Framework and the requirements of the Privacy Act 1988.
De-identification steps include removing all direct identifiers, applying statistical noise to reduce re-identification risk, and ensuring minimum cell sizes in any published findings to prevent individual inference.
OneSelf maintains a de-identification register and conducts periodic re-identification risk assessments. No research output will be published that creates a material risk of identifying any individual member.

Who conducts research
Research may be conducted internally by the OneSelf data science team, or in collaboration with external research partners including universities, public health institutions, and medical research organisations.
All external research partners are required to execute a Data Research Agreement with OneSelf. This agreement prohibits re-identification, restricts use to the agreed research purpose, and requires compliance with applicable ethics and privacy obligations.
OneSelf does not provide research data to pharmaceutical companies, insurers, or commercial data brokers.

Your participation
You may consent to research participation during the onboarding process or at any time through your account settings under Privacy & Research.
You may choose to participate in all research, limit participation to specific research categories (for example, metabolic health only), or not participate at all. Your choices can be updated at any time.

Your rights
You have the right to withdraw from research participation at any time. Withdrawal means your data will not be included in future research datasets.
Data already incorporated into a research dataset prior to your withdrawal cannot be removed from that specific dataset, as doing so would compromise the integrity of completed analysis. However, withdrawal prevents any future use.
You may request a summary of how your data has contributed to research by contacting research@oneself.com.

Ethics oversight
All OneSelf research involving human health data is conducted under the oversight of an independent Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (NHMRC, 2023).
Research protocols are reviewed and approved by the HREC before data access is granted. Ethics approval details are available on request.

Data security
Research datasets are stored in secure, access-controlled environments separate from the production OneSelf platform. Access is restricted to authorised researchers and is logged and audited.
External research partners access data only through secure data rooms and may not export raw datasets. All research environments are subject to OneSelf’s information security standards.
